چکیده

An under-addressed question regarding the usage of small devices is how information gathering from such devices is limited or changed relative to a full-size display? This study explores how factual recall from a text interacts with display size and other text characteristics. In this experiment, participants read several expository texts on either small or normal size displays, and font size was also manipulated within participants. Results indicate that while users are able to accurately diagnose different character sizes, character size does significantly interact with display size to affect remembering. Those character sizes that increased the amount of scrolling on the small device screen produced lower levels of factual recall than typesets that better condensed textual information. These results provide several interesting suggestions for the future design of small devices and mobile interfaces to protect learning. 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A study of operators’ computing efficiency with special focus on the readability under different viewing angles of a desktop

The main objective of this work is to determine the reading performance of operators’ under different viewing angles of a desktop computer. The effects of text/background color, viewing distance and character size on the speed of reading were investigated. The text and/or the background color combination were varied, with constant luminance contrast. Performance was recorded in terms of words p...

Legibility of Condensed Perceptually-Tuned Grayscale Fonts

We analyze the quality of condensed text on LCD displays, generated with unhinted and hinted bilevel characters, with traditional anti-aliased and with perceptually-tuned grayscale characters. Hinted bi-level characters and perceptually-tuned grayscale characters improve the quality of displayed small size characters (8pt, 6pt) up to a line condensation factor of 80%. At higher condensation fac...

Stomatal Density as a Selection Criterion for Developing Tea Varieties with High Physiological Efficiency

Stomata, the small opening in leaf connecting plant with atmosphere, play pivotal roles in global water and carbon cycles. Stomata regulate the two key important physiological functions viz. photosynthesis and transpiration and thus are crucial for performance of crop species in changing climatic conditions. Although environmental factors influence the density and size of stomata, the genetic c...

Positive Display Polarity Is Particularly Advantageous for Small Character Sizes: Implications for Display Design

OBJECTIVE To test the display luminance hypothesis of the positive polarity advantage and gain insights for display design, the joint effects of display polarity and character size were assessed with a proofreading task BACKGROUND Studies have shown that dark characters on light background (positive polarity) lead to better legibility than do light characters on dark background (negative pola...
